The structure of the abs.
The abdominal muscles include the rectus abdominis muscle, the external and internal oblique muscles, and the transversus abdominis muscle.
Rectus Abdominis
The rectus abdominis is the most visible muscle in the abdominal region. It extends vertically from the xiphoid process to the pubic symphysis. It is responsible for trunk flexion, meaning the forward bending of the upper body.
Oblique abs
The external oblique muscles are located on the sides of the abdomen, extending from the ribs and iliac bone to the thoracolumbar fascia. They are responsible for the rotation and lateral flexion of the trunk.
The internal oblique muscles are just beneath the external obliques. They also extend from the ribs and iliac bone to the thoracolumbar fascia. They play a role in the rotation and lateral flexion of the trunk but work in opposition to the external obliques.
Transverse abdominal muscle
The transverse abdominis is the deepest of the abdominal muscles. It inserts into the last six ribs through its aponeuroses, the inner side of the iliac crest, and the posterior part of the linea alba (the tendinous midline band on the anterior wall of the abdomen). It is responsible for abdominal compression and trunk stabilization.
