The Structure of Trapezius and Rhomboids

The trapezius and the rhomboids are two distinct muscle groups that work synergistically in movements involving the elevation, depression, rotation, and retraction of the scapula. They also play a crucial role in maintaining good posture by keeping the shoulders in an optimal position. These muscles are located in the upper back region:

Trapezius:

The trapezius is a diamond-shaped muscle that extends from the base of the skull along the spine to the scapula and clavicle.

It is divided into three parts: the upper, middle, and lower trapezius.

The upper trapezius originates from the occiput and attaches to the clavicle, while the middle and lower trapezius attach to the scapula.

Rhomboids:

The rhomboids are muscles situated between the shoulder blades, beneath the trapezius.

They consist of two distinct muscles known as the rhomboid major and rhomboid minor.

The rhomboids originate from the spine and attach to the scapula. The rhomboid major is closer to the spine and extends to the middle part of the scapula, while the rhomboid minor is closer to the lower angle of the scapula.
