Leg press calf raises

by Dec 22, 2023Calves

What are calf raises on the leg press machine ?

Calf raises on the leg press machine are a single-joint exercise that targets the calf muscles. The emphasis is on the gastrocnemius (the twin muscles of the calf), but the soleus muscles are also engaged.

This exercise can be performed on a 45-degree leg press machine or a horizontal one, provided there is enough space beneath the platform to allow your heels to sink.

It’s an ideal exercise if you have limited equipment in your gym and need an effective way to specifically target your calf muscles.

How to do calf raises on the leg press machine:

  • Position yourself on the leg press machine, ensuring your back is arched and pressed against the seat.
  • Place the balls of your feet at the bottom of the platform, with your heels hanging off the edge.
  • Extend your legs by pushing the platform, maintaining a slight bend in your knees.
  • Let your heels sink under the platform to stretch your calves.
  • Push as forcefully as possible with the balls of your feet without moving your knees.
  • Contract your calves at the top of the movement to ensure full range of motion.
